WHY STUDY GENERATIONAL TRAUMA?
The effects of trauma echo down several generations. Environmental conditions and socio-cultural setting experienced by grandparents influence the gene expression and the developmental pathway of their grandchildren. Through the process of epigenetic inheritance, children of parents who experience stress and PTSD have an increased risk of depression, anxiety, and mood disorders. Studies have highlighted the impact of epigenetic inheritance through the study of holocaust survivors and their offspring. The relationship between the traumatic experience of Africans enslaved in the United States and the resulting bio-psycho-social conditions of the descendants of enslaved Africans is under-researched. Without understanding the historical context of the descendants of Africans enslaved in the United States and “Black” and “African American” descendants of Negro and Colored Americans, crime prevention cannot be accurately developed.
